Welcome to Berlin... city who's vibrant life makes it a place of parties, its tolerant nature a place of protests and rallies - and a city which has being trying to reinvent itself since the fall of the Berlin Wall and all it stood for. This makes it, in my opinion, a weird city to visit as a tourist...
Berlin's main "touristy" sites are generally memorials or historical places in which horrible things were done... there isn't much historical architecture from the Prussian Empire as the city was almost flattened during WWII - and those that do remain have been converted into museums which show the various restoration work or what the area had looked like per-WWII... all in all you keep tripping over solemn events which really aren't the usual touristy destination.
Oh sure, there were people taking their posed photos in the Jewish Memorial (one of the most effective I have seen) and buying up little bits of the Berlin Wall for a souvenir... but both Matt and I agreed that it seemed a little weird to do that sort of thing.. so unlike Paris - you don't have to worry about seeing too much of our smiling faces :)
